    Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

Discovering your child has food allergies is hard. As a new parent, I was aware food allergies were a possibility. I even know several people with allergies, so it was definitely front of mind. Yet it somehow seemed impossible that my baby would have any issues. I guess like any serious health condition, you feel immune – until you’re not.

Well, I guess now it really has been a while since I posted. Sometimes, life gets in the way of our best intentions. A few things happened in my personal life that unintentionally amounted to a summer blog break. Happy to be back! One of the many things I did this summer was work on my backyard urban garden. I am lucky to live in an area of the city where houses have yards, and even luckier to have one the larger yards on the block. When we moved in, I put in several raised beds that I use for a vegetable and herb garden each spring and summer. As…

    Black and White Blondies

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted here. Don’t worry, I have been baking (I’m sure you were). This recipe was made an enjoyed several weeks ago; I’m playing catch-up with getting it posted. My paying job was taking up a lot more of my time. We were nearing a project deadline and an already stressful job got even more so. Some staff were visiting from other branches. One of them is a friend who normally hears about my baking but doesn’t get to try it. So I asked her what she might like me to make and bring in. She said something chocolate. Of course! I’m pretty sure chocolate…

    Chocolate Caramel Shortbread

Have you ever had a serious kitchen disaster? Not just something you baked or cooked that didn’t turn out how you hoped, I mean a true catastrophe. I’ve heard of people accidentally using salt instead of sugar in a cake, or trying to brown something under a broiler and instead setting it on fire. Until recently, I was pretty lucky. I had experienced plenty of minor mishaps, but nothing major. I had probably gotten a little cocky and lazy. This recipe put me back in my place!

    S’more Pie

Pi Day is March 14 – the day dedicated to celebrating pi (π), the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. The number of digits in pi are infinite, but it starts with 3.14, hence the March 14 celebration. (And yes, I did have to do a Google search to remember all that. All I could recall was that it had something to do with geometry and circles. Math was not my favorite subject). The obvious way to celebrate pi day is with pie. The words are pronounced the same, and pies are (generally) circles. It’s a perfect match between math and food. To celebrate, I decided to create a pie…

I hate to waste. Although I have been lucky and blessed to never experience something like the Great Depression, I still see the value in “waste not, want not.” My husband has learned from experience that I should decide when items like toothpaste are actually empty. I can get several more uses out of a tube of toothpaste than he ever thinks will be possible. Avoiding waste definitely extends into the kitchen for me. I’m often cooking and baking for two, which usually means buying ingredients in a volume much larger than I need. Then I try to remember to use up the rest of those items before they go bad. Thank…

Chocolate Raspberry Bundt Cake with White Chocolate Ganache

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day! I’m excited. If you are still looking for something sweet to bake for the special people in your life, may I suggest this pretty cake? This recipe is loosely adapted from one in Nigella Lawson’s How to Be a Domestic Goddess, which I still love many years after getting it. Honestly, who doesn’t want to be a domestic goddess? #goals. I knew I wanted to make a bundt cake that combined chocolate and raspberry flavors. A lot of layer cakes incorporate chocolate and berry by having them in separate components – a chocolate cake with a raspberry icing, for example. But I have this adorable heart shaped bundt pan, and…

    Heart Shaped Sandwich Cookies

I love love. I recognize that Valentine’s Day is not a “real” holiday to many people, but I don’t care. It’s my second favorite holiday, (after Christmas, another holiday one could argue is also about love).  Every year I get excited to see the pink and red heart shaped items in the stores. What can I say, I’m a sucker for a heart print! But I am also excited to celebrate a day dedicated to showing the people you love how much you care about them. I’m married now, but I loved Valentine’s Day even when I was single. As a child, I loved handing out cards to my classmates and friends. As a teen,…

    Perfect Chewy Brownies

Brownies can basically be classified into 3 different types: cakey, fudgey, or chewy. People tend to have definite preferences for which type of brownie they love. I don’t know if there are many cakey brownie fans out there (let me know in the comments), but I think there is a definite line drawn between chewy and fudgey brownie people.

    Chocolate Cherry Thumbprints

Is everyone tired of cookies yet? I hope not, because I’m still baking them! I know it’s January and I’m meant to have kale and quinoa on my mind, but I don’t. I’m still thinking about tarts, meringues, and lots of cookies.
